Fun With Lunar Distance

If the earth was the size of a basketball how far would the tennis ball (standing in for the moon, of course) have to be from it to accurately depict the distance between earth and moon? Further than you might think.

You can do the math yourself. The diameter of the earth is about 8,000 miles. The distance between moon and earth is about 240,000 miles. The tennis ball would hence have to be at a distance of 30 times the diameter of the basketball, about 23,5 feet.

Wow. Somehow it looks much closer on Doctor Who.
